Scottish Currency :

Scottish Pound NoteThe basic unit of currency in Scotland is the Scottish Pound Sterling (£) which is divided into 100 pence (p). All Scottish banks have the right to print their own notes. Three choose to do so: The Bank of Scotland (founded 1695), The Royal Bank of Scotland (founded 1727) and the Clydesdale Bank (owned by National Australia Bank). Only the Royal Bank prints pound notes(shown left). All the banks print 5,10,20 and 100 notes. Only the Bank of Scotland and Clydesdale Bank print 50 pound notes. Coins in circulation in Scotland are all issued by the Royal Mint - there are no Scottish specific coins. Bank of England notes (and £ coins) are also perfectly acceptable in Scotland.

IMPORTANT

Scottish bank notes are equal in value and stature to English bank notes (on a one to one basis - ie £1 English = £1 Scottish), and both are accepted in each country. Do not accept a lesser exchange rate for Scottish notes than for English ones - anywhere.

Although Scottish money is acceptable tender in England it is best to e xchange all your Scottish notes for Bank of England notes (or your home currency) before you leave Scotland. You may have difficulty in exchanging Scottish notes in parts of England or abroad.
