Sean Connery:
Sean Connery(1930). Born in the city of Edinburgh on the 25th August 1930 Sean Connery may be remembered most for his portrayal of Iain Fleming's James Bond the suave and sophisticated British secret service agent 007. At the age of 16 he enlisted in the British Navy and entered the Mr. Universe contest in 1953 and finished 3rd in the tall man's division.
Sean Connery worked as a milkman and a coffin polisher before he started his acting career but appears to have kept the best qualities of hi "working class" background. He has never been ashamed to show his real self to his fans. Although he wore a toupee in all of the James Bond movies (he starrted losing his hair as the age of 21) all of his other films (and in private) he wears none.
Proud to be Scottish and from Edinburgh core to his beliefs is a free Scotland campaigning for Scottish Independance and donating to the SNP (he is regularly seen or heard in their party political broadcasts). He is also known for his generosity (he gave all of his income from the film "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and other movies to charity). Sean is confident that Scotland will eventually be self governed and declared in 2003 that he would not return until then. [However the present state of government in the UK seems to have confused the issue!]
Highly respected across Scotland Sean Connery has recieved several honors including the honorary degree of DLitt from St Andrews University in 1988, the Freedom of the City of Edinburgh in 1991 and on New Year's Eve 1991 he was awarded a knighthood at Edinburgh's Holyrood Palace. The knighthood was an hour long event in which Connery spoke of his humble beginnings and his love of Scotland with great pride and emotion.
