Royal Yacht Britannia. The Royal Yacht Britannia is one of the world's most famous ships, for over forty years Britannia served the Royal Family, travelling over one million miles (968 official voyages). The Britannia experience begins in the Visitor Centre on the second floor of Ocean Terminal. Here you will discover Britannia's fascinating past through exhibits, displays and photographs before you collect your complimentary audio handset and step on board Britannia, a privilege previously reserved for guests of Her Majesty The Queen and the Royal Family. The audio tour is available in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Dutch and Japanese. There is also a children's version in English and a printed script for those with hearing difficulties.The Royal Yacht Britannia was l aunched in 1953 at John Brown's Shipyard in Clydebank. Her last, and longest, voyage was in January 1997 when the Britannia set sail from Portsmouth to Hong Kong and on 11 December 1997 Britannia was decommissioned. She is now owned by The Royal Yacht Britannia Trust and is now permanently moored in Edinburgh's historic port of Leith where you can visit her.
The Royal Yacht Britannia is well worth a visit if only to be able to walk in areas previously only available to the Royal Family. You can experience the splendour of the interiors first hand and learn of the ships interesting history. Runner-up in the best UK attraction(2003) you will find the experience memorable. Individual tickets cost around £9 for an adult, with discounts for students, oap's and children with children under the age of 5 entering free. Assoc of Royal Yachtsmen members also enter free.
Unusually photography is welcomed so feel free to take some snaps although they only allow panoramic shots with detailed shots of individual pieces not allowed :-(
